Pediatric / Adolescent Gynecology

Gynecology is health care for women – starting at any age.

Childhood and Adolescence is marked by a number of developmental milestones, physically, cognitively and psychosocially. Adolescent girls, in particular, are confronted with numerous challenges, and the decisions they make can have both short and long-term consequences for their health and well-being. Guidance from a physician, as well as needed reproductive health screening and care can greatly facilitate young people’s healthy transition to adulthood.  We encourage girls to have their first gynecologic visit between the ages of 13 and 15. The first visit may be just a talk between you and the doctor addressing common health concerns. Most of these concerns are a normal part of growing up:

  • Cramps and problems with menstrual periods
  • Acne
  • Weight, body image, eating disorders
  • Sex and sexuality
  • Birth control
  • STDs
  • Alcohol, drugs, and smoking
  • Emotional ups and downs

Usually a pelvic exam is not necessary during the first visit unless you are having problems, such as abnormal bleeding, discharge or pain.

Common Conditions we treat:

  • Congenital anomalies of the reproductive system
