Etonogestrel Implants

Etonogestrel is a hormone that prevents ovulation. This medication changes the cervical mucus and uterine lining, making it harder for sperm to reach the uterus and for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus. The Etonogestrel implant has medicine contained inside a small plastic rod and implanted into the skin of the upper arm. The rod can remain in place and can provide continuous contraception for up to 3 years.

Intrauterine Device (IUD)

An intrauterine device, or IUD is a small, plastic, flexible, T-shaped device that is placed into a woman’s uterus to prevent pregnancy. There are two types of IUDs available in the USA.

This type of IUD releases the hormone, progestin which causes the cervical muscles to become thicker so sperm cannot reach the egg. This hormone also changes the lining of the uterus so implantation of a fertilized egg cannot occur.

This type of IUD contains copper, which is slowly released into the uterine cavity. The copper stops the sperm from making it through the vagina and uterus to reach the egg, thus preventing fertilization.
